Vatadage / The Stupa House – Polonnaruwa

‘Vatadage’ or ‘The Stupa House’ is an ancient Buddhist relic structure located in the city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. The Vatadage is a circular structure with a central stupa, surrounded by four Buddha statues and three concentric rows of stone pillars. The roof of the Vatadage is supported by pillars, and the entire structure is enclosed by a wall. The walls of this ancient structure are decorated with carvings of animals, flowers, and other motifs.

Also, Vatadage is considered to be the only structure of its kind in the whole of Sri Lanka. This ancient structure is believed to have been built during the reign of Parakramabahu I (1153-1186), and is thought to have housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha. Today, the Vatadage is a popular tourist destination and is one of the most visited sites in Polonnaruwa.
